The long answer
The work comes in four parts. First, confirm your event qualifies. Federal rules recognize eight: stopping work entirely, cutting work back meaningfully, marriage, divorce or annulment, the death of your spouse, a pension that stopped or was reduced, income-producing property lost through no choice of your own, and an employer settlement that distorted a year of income. A market decline, a required minimum distribution, or a one-time gain does not qualify.
Second, estimate this year’s MAGI — modified adjusted gross income, meaning your adjusted gross income plus any tax-exempt interest. Build it from real components: pension award letters, your Social Security benefit statement, last year’s 1099s, final pay stubs. Social Security later compares the estimate to the return you actually file, so the goal is a number you could defend, not the lowest one imaginable.
Third, gather proof of the event itself — an employer letter with your last day of work, a divorce decree, a death certificate. Fourth, file with your local Social Security office, by certified mail with photocopies kept, or by phone appointment at 1-800-772-1213. Keep paying the billed premium while the appeal is processed; if it is approved, the overcharged months come back.
